SPAN 427 - Latin American Women Writers
This course focuses on reading and analyzing works from Latin American women writers. Examines fiction by and about women from varied sociocultural backgrounds to discover the diversity and the commonality of female experience in different geographical regions. Students examine the narrative strategies employed by these writers in interpreting social, political, cultural, and religious forces that create gender, class, and ethnic barriers in Latin American society. Taught in Spanish.
This class was one of my favorites and I would not tire of talking about it since it had a great impact on me. Dr. Fernandez helped us a lot to understand what was going through the minds of women writers when writing. each of the readings intrigued me. I remember the first reading we had was that of Sister Juan Ines de la Cruz when I read it for me it was not easy to pretend that I spoke the Spanish language well. But I realized that I was not the only one and that there was so much of that letter that we had to dialogue in class in order to understand it more fully. Sor Juan is part of the Baroque and the way of writing of that time was somewhat difficult to understand, but the help of Dr. Fernandez did not help much since we spent a lot of time understanding Sor Juan's reading but with the help of Dra Fernandez we managed to understand better. Later, little by little, she presented us with new material and we were so impressed by the impact that Sor Juana had on women writers. Each of the readings made me think and want to analyze in depth. When we went to classes we tried to interpret the reading with questions that Dr. Fernandez asked us and when we did, she could better understand the message that the author wanted to convey to us. In the novels we read you could look at the role of the woman as she was submissive to her husband and how they were so unhappy but later when they regained their freedom then it was as if we had also done it since each of the readings had a different impact . in some of the novels of which had an open ending we wondered what happened next. every novel we read made us feel something but in that Dr. Fernandez decided to put us as a reading about the children who cross the border and that I think was a reading that marks us forever since it is about the children who immigrate to this country, avoiding the danger of their countries. some are lucky to stay and others for not being able to express themselves well and tell what they suffered in their countries they sent him back. This reading is based on the questions children are asked when they are detained and some manage to get a lawyer to take their case and others face a defenseless tribune with no one to represent them before a judge. This reading was the one that struck me the most.
