HCOM 328 - Latina Life Stories
Explores intersections of ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, and class through autobiographical and testimonial writings by Chicana, Mexican-origin, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, and mixed-heritage Latinas in the U.S. Students produce multimedia digital stories about their own lives and identities. (Prereq: GE Area A1 and A2 and A3 with a C- or better)
In the Latina Life Stories class, our teacher taught us the importance of testimonies, since each woman we read about had something to say. some experience that made us identify with them. the women who emigrated to this country each have a story to tell. But not only women, but also all the people who were once discriminated against or wanted to be undermined. I must admit that this was one of my favorite classes and I was excited to know that I was not the only one in this country who felt excluded just because she had not been born in this country.
In this class we made a video that talks about where we came from, that talks about our trajectory. Never imagine how important it is to share our story with others. When I look at the testimonies of other students, I realize that we share many things in common. One of them is to do what is possible to have a better future and take advantage of the opportunities that this country offers us. It was easy for our parents to just stay in their country and not come here to the United States to start from scratch, but they came for us to offer us a better quality of life. We all share the same dream of being someone in life and being able to help our family.
