MLO 4 Secondary Culture Other than Hispanic Cultures 4.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of Hispanic cultures with a second culture other than those. 4.2 Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture other than Hispanic cultures. There are two pathways by which this outcome can be fulfilled:
The student completes at least one upper division course whose focus is a socio-cultural group not reflected by a Hispanic culture. General areas to choose from are: literature, the social sciences (anthropology, geography, history, political systems), art history, music history and/or the second cultural group. With faculty approval, the student may opt for a more individual pathway, choosing to independently study, research and analyze the working components of the second culture.
It is impressive to learn about the cultures of other countries. By taking this class I felt very identified with the Asian culture, the beauty of their culture and learn that they, like us, are also proud of their culture. Being able to take this class made me reflect that not only our culture tells a story but theirs and each one of the cultures around the world have. When a person who does not know about our traditions and customs asks me about them, I am filled with emotion to share with others how proud I am of my culture. This class made me recognize that there are many other cultures that are beautiful and it is surprising what we can learn from them. When we read the different authors, I had to read a little about the author and I had to have a basic knowledge in order to understand what the author wanted to tell us. My teacher gathered us in teams and we discussed what we read, she explained relevant things to us about what we read in order to better understand the reading. In this class we made a presentation that you could tell about the history of the critics since there was a time when they were not treated fairly and many died because of that event. It is important to note that it took a few years for their rights to be respected. We analyze some books that express the disagreement of those affected, stories of their relatives who lived firsthand what happened. We compared some movies that made us understand culture better since we had no idea what it was like. japanese interment camps MLO 4 HCOM 322
