SPAN 315 - Introduction to Translation: Spanish/English
Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. Taught in Spanish.
In the Introduction to Translation: Spanish / English I learned the importance of translation, since in order for countries to communicate with each other, a good interpreter is needed. People who work as interpreters can have the responsibility of translating with the exact words any mistake that could put countries in danger. In the translation class we tried to translate jokes but it was not the same since each country has its jokes that reflect its culture. Two people were invited to our class because their job was to translate from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English and they confessed that it was a very difficult job but each one had their strategy to make their translation possible. For example when translating these people into notes. the notes were not just words since it would be very difficult to write down everything that is being said. their notes were based on symbols to help them remember what they are going to translate. for example we told them what we had done before going to school that morning so they began to put symbols on the board to help them remember what we had done to be able to translate it into English. It was very impressive how you have to have certain skills to be a good translator. One of those skills is being able to listen very carefully and understand what the other person is saying. Being a person who can do two things at once since not only is he listening but he is also creating his notes. You also have to remember what your notes mean in order to interpret what the person said. The people who went to give a demonstration also told us that they worked as a team since during a meeting that could last a long time they had to rest a bit. Another demonstration they gave us was that when translating the person puts on a hearing aid to the people who are having a conversation in two different languages and the interpreters have a microphone where they translate what the other person is saying in their language.
