LING392-01: Nature of Language & Language Acquisition
This course introduces you to the scientific study of language and language acquisition, which includes theoretical concepts, such as structural linguistics, sociolinguistics, language development and change in mono and multilingual language learners, and application of linguistics and language acquisition principles in reading and writing development. For students in the Liberal Studies program, developing knowledge base in linguistics and language development is a requirement in order to apply their knowledge to real-world instructional or tutorial settings. The knowledge, skills, and abilities gained in this learning experience are used to demonstrate fulfillment for one of the Liberal Studies Major Learning Outcomes MLO 5 Subject Matter Generalist: Students demonstrate competency in subject area content and complete a coherent depth of study for successful practice in California public education. This course is a pre-professional learning experience, which is a prerequisite for teacher preparation for entry to the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential Program at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB).
When taking this class, I realized that it would help me a lot to understand English better, since being my second language and having learned the language when I grew up, I have errors as much as grammar as when speaking it. In this class I learned about the importance of phonemes, syntax morphemes and semantics. in the writing that we had to do we had to identify the errors and identify them since this would help us to understand these concepts. I realized when making the project that many of the errors that I identified made them to me also when speaking this helped me to better identify and be able to correct the way I speak.
In this class I also learned about the different theories of which support that a person who is learning two languages at the same time is important to maintain his mother tongue in order to have a better understanding of the second language. Studies say that when a child learns the second language, he learns it faster than a person who learns a second language as an adult.
